Image 2 Research and Design (La Llorona)

⚠️ Gore warning/ Sensitive Topics ⚠️

Research:

(Initial Research)

For my second image I wanted to explore the myth of La Llorona or who is also known as ‘The Weeping Woman’ which originates from Mexico and Latin America. La Llorona is a spirit of a woman who went insane one night killing her husband and drowned her children in a lake nearby her house. It says her sorrowful soul wander the earth looking for her children and ends up stealing others mistaking them for her own and bring them to the same fate, drowning them. (Castro, 2023)

below is a couple  of the videos I also watched which explains it more in depth:

(Image Research)

For my image research I wanted to explore not just the different interpretations of La Llorona I also wanted to incorporate some research into what her victims would look like also, as I want to explore more into a prop for this image. Down below is a couple MoodBoards I created to get a bit of inspiration for my face plan/ chart:

As expected when going into this research I didn't find much about decomposition in kids in water so to cover my bases to have an understanding I watched a couples videos that explained it in adults, one of least upsetting ones is just below:

Like for the previous image I am going to make a list of things I would like to include in my 2nd Major Project image. I’ve definitely decided on making a prop instead of doing another makeup look for this image, so I am going to make a decomposing baby head. Though I’ll be making a prop for this image I want to include La Llorona herself as well, so I was thinking incorporating her hands or her hair to show her off too. This is the list of things I want to include within the image:

  • decomposing baby head
  • Missing eye
  • moss
  • water
  • hands with log nails
  • black hair

For this face plan/ chart I gonna sketch up what I would like the image to look like. Down below is the first idea of my image:

(Prosthetic Design)

For my prop prosthetic I started off by using a wood plank and a piece of wire with tape to make the base of my sculpting, I then scrunched up a ball of tin foil and tapped it to the top of the wire, before rolling out a thin layer of monster clay and planing it over the base I had made. I then started adding layers of clay and sculpting the face of the baby, which took around a month or so to do.

Once all the sculpting was done a generous amount of MacWax release agent over the sculpt, then I mixed 400mls of silicone (200mls A and 200mls of B) then adding 10mls of silicone thickener. Once mixed thoroughly it became a think paste, I then scooped it onto the sculpt spreading it around with a spatula, once an even layer was applied and had dried I repeated that step 4 more times to create a thicker and thicker layer, eventually it created a mould of the sculpt wounds everything was dy. I made a small cut at the back of the sculpt and started wiggling it out, once it was out I gave the inside of the mould a clean making sure there was no left over clay in there before mixing a small amount of silicone to glue the opening that was made. Once that was all dry MacWax was sprayed inside the mould, the clay used to make the sculpt was weighed so I knew how much silicone was needed (400g of clay was measured).

I then placed the mould in a bowl to keep it upright and steady. Baldise was put in the mould and spun around to create a thin layer so the silicone wouldn’t stick to the silicone getting poured in. Silicone was then mixed (133mls of A, 133mls of B, then I added 133mls of Deadener 1:1:0.25 ratio). Deadener was added to crate a bit a squish to the head making it a bit more life like. To make the skin look like it was sat in water for a while so I added blue and yellow flock into the silicone and mixed it in thoroughly before pouring it into the mould. I then let that dry of a day before cutting down the same slit at the back again and slowly taking the head out. I dusted it down with a light layer of baby powder before I repeated the again so I would have x2 baby heads so I can practice colouring it to see what colours I wanted to use. As for colouring the head I used a mixture of alcohol activated SFX paint and using different textures brushes to get the desired effect.

I liked how the first one turned out, though I didn’t quite like the colouring I did so on my second run I decided to go a bit lighter on the colouring. I also decided to mix up 10mls of A and B extra just to get the neck filled in the mould. The second run came out perfect and it was just what I had in mind.
